Privacy Policy

Overview

This privacy policy pertains to visitors of this website, the personal blog of Kermit O, who is also its sole operator. Learn more about Kermit here.

Kermit O is morally and ethically opposed to the collection, commodification, or operationalization of personal data, having written and presented at conferences as to the perils of Big Data where it is used for purposes of profit or social control, commonly known as “surveillance capitalism“.

For this reason, neither this website nor its operator collects, manages, or stores any personal data from its visitors. The only data available to the sole operator is analytics about readership (e.g. how many visitors, and which articles are most read), and this information is anonymized. This privacy policy is intended as an explicit assurance of the sole operator’s commitment not to collect, store, or retain personal information about the website’s visitors.

General Terms

This website does not collect any personal data from visitors, and therefore there is no data to retain, operationalize, or share with third parties. The typical methods for collecting personal data, such as comment and contact forms, have been disabled. Neither do visitors do not have the ability to login, or to upload media. For these reasons, there is also no data over which any rights need to be considered.

Cookies

This website would ordinarily use cookies for user comments and for backend management. As comments are disabled, and the sole operator is the only person who can log in, these cookies do not store any information from website visitors.

If you visit the login page — which is not directly linked from any page on the website, meaning that you’d have to go out of your way to access it — a temporary cookie is set to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded videos from other websites (YouTube or Vimeo), which can behave in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website. Under normal circumstances, these websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

However, this website makes a good faith effort to protect users’ privacy even from external content providers, such as using YouTube’s Enhanced Privacy Mode for video embeds. For example, this article contains an external video from YouTube. The image below shows the uMatrix panel for the article, demonstrating that no cookies are set either by youtube.com or googlevideo.com.

In all cases, this website itself does not view or use any information collected by external parties.

Where an external content provider does not enable this additional layer of protection, no such content will be embedded on this website, and instead an external link will be provided. Visitors clicking those external links are then subject to the privacy policies of those websites.
