I’ve maintained a blog of some kind since the late 1990s. And yet I imagine that the number of people, or instances of people, reading my writing to be exceedingly few. For more than a decade, I’ve curated my web presence on my personal website, and through the years have been on and off social media. For privacy reasons, disdain for big tech algorithms, and because of the well-researched and deeply felt improvements in mental health that come from avoiding the doomscroll.
What attention my website has received has mostly come from me linking people to it directly through my personal connections, email, texts, even word of mouth. But…the point of writing, especially publishing on the internet, is to be read, and if moving to a platform like Substack will get more engagement with my words and thoughts, then it’s worth a shot.
Like most people in my political circles, I caught wind of the Substack controversy around “free speech” and the “platforming of Nazis”, and well…given the utter devolution of Twitter into a right-wing troll farm, and the fact that there are countless other places where hateful people can find a voice, it almost seems pointless to boycott this one. Besides, I think it’s probably better to try and drown them out with clear-eyed perspectives. And so, I’m heading over there to do my part…
